Events in Duluth Minnesota: Seasonal Group Hotel Guide

A seasonal guide to Duluth, Minnesota events and group hotel booking. Covers Grandma's Marathon, Bentleyville, Duluth Airshow, and festivals throughout the year.

Duluth packs an impressive events calendar into a city of 90,000 people. The combination of Lake Superior, outdoor recreation, and a thriving arts scene means there is something worth traveling for in every season. Here is a month-by-month breakdown of the biggest events and how to handle group hotel bookings for each.

Summer Events (June - August)

Grandma's Marathon (Third Saturday of June)

The biggest single-day event in Duluth. 9,000+ runners and thousands more spectators. The race runs from Two Harbors to Canal Park along the scenic North Shore. Hotels in Canal Park sell out 2 to 3 months ahead. Group rates during marathon weekend run $169 to $229 per night for walkable hotels.

For running groups, book by March to guarantee Canal Park lodging. Two Harbors hotels (near the starting line) are a good alternative at $119 to $149 per night.

Duluth Airshow (July)

A 2-day airshow over the Duluth Harbor with military jets, stunt planes, and aerial demonstrations. Draws 50,000+ spectators. Hotels see moderate demand but do not sell out as quickly as marathon weekend. Book 4 to 6 weeks ahead for groups.

Tall Ships Duluth (August, select years)

When the Tall Ships festival comes to Duluth, it draws 100,000+ visitors over 3 days. Canal Park and Bayfront hotels sell out months ahead. This is a once-every-few-years event, so check the schedule and book immediately when dates are announced.

Bayfront Festival Park Concerts (June - August)

Duluth's outdoor concert venue hosts national acts throughout summer. Recent headliners have included Zach Bryan, Hozier, and Luke Combs. Concert nights drive hotel demand in Canal Park, especially for Saturday shows.

Fall Events (September - November)

Fall Colors Season (Mid-September - Mid-October)

The North Shore fall colors draw thousands of leaf peepers. Peak color typically hits the first two weeks of October. Duluth and the North Shore Scenic Drive are the primary destinations. Weekend hotel rates spike 15 to 25 percent during peak color. Book weekends 6 to 8 weeks ahead.

Duluth Dylan Fest (May, but planning note)

A celebration of Bob Dylan (born in Duluth) with concerts, film screenings, and events across town. Smaller event but attracts dedicated music fans in groups.

Winter Events (November - February)

Bentleyville Tour of Lights (Mid-November - Late December)

The largest free walk-through light display in the US. Over 5 million lights at Bayfront Festival Park. Draws 200,000+ visitors over the season. Friday and Saturday nights are busiest. Canal Park hotels during Bentleyville weekends: $119 to $169 per night for groups. Book 4 to 6 weeks ahead for December weekends.

Spirit Mountain Skiing (December - March)

Duluth's ski area is 10 minutes from downtown. Ski groups often combine a day on the slopes with a night in Canal Park. Midweek ski trips offer the best group hotel rates at $99 to $129 per night.

Spring Events (March - May)

Spring is Duluth's quietest season. Hotel rates are at their lowest (25 to 40 percent below summer). The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon runs in January/February along the North Shore. The Duluth Homegrown Music Festival (May) is a week-long celebration of local music.

Group Booking Strategy by Season

Summer (especially marathon weekend): Book 2-3 months ahead. Rates: $149-$229.

Fall colors weekends: Book 6-8 weeks ahead. Rates: $129-$179.

Bentleyville winter: Book 4-6 weeks ahead. Rates: $119-$169.

Spring/off-season: Book 2-3 weeks ahead. Rates: $89-$129.
